The funeral service of one of the eight people killed in the May 12 derailment of an Amtrak train near Philadelphia is being held in Hewlett at Riverside-Boulevard Chapel on Broadway today.
Rockaway Beach resident Justin Zemser, a sophomore at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was heading to visit his parents on Tuesday, when the train went off the tracks. Officials said that the train was traveling at 106 mph more than twice the speed limit at that portion of the tracks where the train was at that time.
Zemser played football and was a two-time team captain at Channel View High School in Queens. He also played for the Midshipmen.
About 160 classmates of Zemser’s from the Naval Academy are expected to attend the funeral. The service is being streamed live over the Internet.
