And … and … and

Posted

It’s amazing how one little “and” can create a partnership between individuals or ideas or constructs or items that folks instantly recognize and understand. The “and” that slips between two competitors somehow writes them, while an “and” joining two of a kind embraces their image or strengthens their impact or seals their bond.

And because of “and,” some things (or people or concepts) just go together to make so much come together like”

Hot and cold … in and out … law and order … judge and jury and up and down. Who doesn’t know Batman and Robin … frick and frack … Heckle and Jeckle … Tom and Jerry … Lord and Taylor… Bonnie and Clyde … Will and Grace … Punch and Judy… Barnes and Noble and Adam and Eve, not to mention Rocky and Bullwinkle.

And what about there and now … if and when … off and on … fast and loose… down and out … slow and steady … straight and true … then and there …. up and down … near and far.

There is: black and blue … listen and learn … love and war … soft and cuddly… trial and error … part and parcel … brick and mortar … lock and load … sunny and breezy … blood and guts … spit and polish … God and country and love.

You can have franks and beans … milk and cookies … milk and honey … bread and butter … lettuce and tomatoes … spaghetti and meatballs … apples and oranges all with sweet and low.

Plenty of folks swing and miss … sing and dance … show and tell … dodge and weave … lie and steal … preserve and protect … moan and groan … rinse and spit and come and go.

There’s the needle and thread … per and paper… ball and chain … cat and mouse … lock and key… hammer and nail …wind and rain …bed and breakfast …dollar and cents … horse and buggy… table and chairs … hat and coat … savings and loan … question and answer … short and sweet … sweet and sour … wet and dry light and dark … have and hearty … one and two … plain and simple … pride and joy… back and forth … dumb and dumber… rough and ready… right and left as well as socks and shoes … husbands and wives … friends and lovers … cops and robbers … cowboys and Indians … chutes and ladders … cats and dogs … and pots and pans and cuts and bruises and hugs and kisses and lost and found.

The list, of course, is andless, is mean, endless, but there is one unique phrase where the well-placed “and” helps capture the essence of friendship, family, faith, the human spirit, and that is when it forms: you and me.
