Administrators, students and teachers from The Brandeis School in Lawrence lined up outside the Harry Laufer Jewish Educational Campus on Frost Lane for the school’s first-ever Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11.

Head of School Raz Levin spoke to the students before the parade and said that Veterans Day is a tribute to the “brave men and women who protect us so we can live in peace.”

Taking place an hour earlier than the traditional, ceremonial time of Veterans Day, the marchers proceeded up Frost Lane to Central Avenue and proceeded to Washington Avenue then to Broadway and back to the school.

Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day is a federal holiday that honors United States military veterans. It is commemorated at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when World War I, “the war to end all wars,” came to a halt. It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954, a change sought by major national veterans organizations.

Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue, Nassau County police and, the police auxiliary also took part and  Albert Hinken drove a red Volkswagen with fellow veteran Martin  Schwartz and Albert's wife, Elissa at the front of the parade.
