Hewlett firefighters put out the blaze that occurred when a taxicab’s engine caught fire at the intersection of East Rockaway Road and Union Avenue in Hewlett.

A taxicab from Hewlett-based Ollie’s Taxi & Airport Service caught fire at the intersection of East Rockaway Road and Union Avenue in Hewlett at 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 20, according to officials on the scene.
Hewlett firefighters responded to the car fire that apparently began due to a mechanical problem with the vehicle’s engine. The driver and one passenger got out of the vehicle unharmed.
Police had the road closed for 30 minutes as the fire was extinguished and the car was removed from the scene.
