Cabaret Night supports charitable causes

Hewlett High School hosted the annual Cabaret Night in the gymnasium last Saturday. The event attracted hundreds of community members who united for a night of laughter, singing, dancing, music, comedy and pure entertainment.

Cabaret Night was created by the Rosenberg family after Laura Rosenberg, a Hewlett High student, died of pediatric cancer in 1981. Since then, the family has partnered with the school to organize an event that raises money donated to pediatric cancer research facilities and Hewlett-based SIBSPlace, a free program supported by South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside which provides siblings of children with cancer with academic and emotional support.

Students who participated in the show also get to perform for patients at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Hewlett High School is the only high school on Long Island permitted to visit the center and interact with the patients.

Cabaret Night brings together students who sing, perform comedy, dance and play an array of musical instruments to put on an unforgettable performance.  Year after year, one of the biggest highlights of the night includes the comedy team poking fun at their favorite teachers. This year’s theme was “All American Cabaret” which featured red, white and blue streamers, confetti and decorations in honor of the U.S.

“Cabaret Night has been an extremely amazing experience to be a part of.  It has been such a pleasure to work alongside such talented people and help raise money for a great cause,” said senior Allie Rebenstock, a member of the comedy team who has been involved in the planning of the special event for four years.

However, one may not realize the work that goes on behind the scenes, which is crucial to ensure the night is a success. The business committee worked hard for months — producing a journal, creating advertisements, doing publicity and reaching out to local businesses for donations, along with the food and beverages that were served.

The event once again was a success, as thousands of dollars were raised, many laughs were shared, a plethora of notes were played and sung.  Now, the planning for next year’s Cabaret Night soon begins all over again!
