Capturing those Lawrence Woodmere Academy Homecoming ‘Kodak’ moments

Posted

As I sat down this week to write my second column, I allowed the natural confusion of my type A brain to run free. I considered the piles of homework I had, the clubs and sports that would take away every free moment I had this week. I even tried to calculate the amount of sleep, or lack there of, that I would get. But just like any regular 17-year-old the overwhelming thoughts were in favor of my recreational time.

Every senior is determined to have “the senior year.” This year is best described as a flawless collection of Kodak moments with friends; both related and unrelated to school. I took a look at the calendar of my senior year and anticipated the next Kodak-worthy school event: Homecoming, this Saturday.

Ah, Homecoming. A day that can always be counted upon for biting wind, sunny skies, and hundreds of smiles. Despite the fall weather the atmosphere is always lively. The food, the soccer games, the alumni are all plentiful about campus. Full of rides, and face painting, Homecoming is perhaps the peak of every student’s school pride.

The build-up to Homecoming begins long before the actual day. Planning begins in September with the senior class leading the pack; excited to raise money for senior trips, prom, and class gifts. The week heading into Homecoming weekend is known as spirit week. This week is much like an extended costume party with a daily theme. One day being “red carpet ready,” another favorite being “pajama day.” Friday, however, is always reserved for the school colors of Lawrence Woodmere Academy. Blue and white. Dressed in their school colors LWA students will pile into the gym for an electric pep rally. With music blasting, and energy high, the many fall sports teams are announced.

The excitement will carry into the night as the faculty show takes place. It is a chance for students to see their favorite teachers in Oscar-worthy performances. This musical is written entirely by the drama department’s very own Kathleen Glasberg and Michael Piedmont as well as the music department’s Alexander Altieri. I have had the pleasure of working with all three of these teachers and can assure you their talent is show cased in these annual productions. I look forward to seeing the last faculty show I will attend as a student this year.

Homecoming is one of Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s many priorities. Without it my senior year would never be complete. That day I’ll add another piece to my senior year puzzle. I know some of you may be wondering whether or not I’m sad to see my final Homecoming. In all honesty, I won’t know until it’s passed.
