Cedarhurst village opposes proposed Post Office closure

In an effort to prevent the possible closure of the Cedarhurst post office, Village of Cedarhurst Board of Trustees approved a resolution opposing the plan by the U.S. Postal Service at their Oct. 4 meeting.

According to a Sept. 18 letter sent by the local chapter of the postal workers union to Cedarhurst Mayor Andrew Parise, the U.S. Postal Service plans to close the 124 Grove Ave. location.

“We’re absolutely against it and will do everything in our power to prevent it,” Parise said of the potential closure. “Our post office is the center of the Five Towns, not only for Cedarhurst residents, but residents from all over. I think it will be harmful to our village and it will be a big inconvenience.”

Parise added that the resolution would allow the village to reach out to government officials such as State Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) and U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, among others.

Based on information in the resolution, the Cedarhurst post office serves more than 45,000 people in Cedarhurst, Inwood, Lawrence, Woodmere, Hewlett, Woodsburgh; Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Neck and the more than 300 businesses located in the Cedarhurst Village and postal zone.

“The Mayor and the Board of Trustees strenuously oppose the proposal by the United States Postal Service to close the USPS branch office located at 124 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst, NY and urges the Village’s representatives in Congress, the State Legislature and the Town of Hempstead to take all necessary steps to prevent its closure or relocation from its present location and to prevent the sale of the building,” the resolution reads.

Parise believes the reason for the closing is because the Cedarhurst post office is the newest building and most valuable one to possibly sell. According to a Congressional Research Service report in January, the USPS lost $25.4 billion between 2007 and 2011. “We’ll do whatever it takes,” Parise said, about trying to keep the post office open.
