Cedarhurst's sidewalk sale was a boon to shopping and sun tanning

It was a shopper’s paradise in Cedarhurst as people crowded Central Avenue in search of bargains at last week’s 23rd annual Sidewalk Sale.

Friends Miriam Mehl and Madeline Cohen-Khani, both of Woodmere, engaged in conversation as they leisurely strolled for, “something to waste their money on,” Mehl said.

Mehl and Cohen-Khani, who bought jewelry, a skirt and a tray, were on the hunt for ladies clothing and shoes. “It’s fun to be out with everyone,” Cohen-Khani said.

Tamara Kane of Body and Skin Care said the Sidewalk Sale served as exposure for her business that moved to Central Avenue in November. “I’m offering 10 percent off products,” she said.

Mindy Schachar of Woodmere was busy looking for accessories for her daughter. “I’m enjoying myself,” she said. “I’ve been here every year and I like bumping into friends.”

Sharon Haber, an employee at Infinity, said the store was selling dresses for $35, shorts, sweatshirts and tops for $10 to $20. “We’re practically giving them away,” she said. Owner, Cindy, said, “Sometimes we get repeat customers but we don’t base our business on the sale,” she said.

Although Joseph Aslan of Valley Stream was wandering Central Avenue alone, he was not shopping for himself. “I’m looking for clothes to buy my granddaughter and wife,” he said. “I come every year and I enjoy walking the streets and seeing what deals stores are offering.”

At Oh! Nuts, a novelty and souvenir shop, employee Carmen Martino was outside selling toys for 50 cents to $2. “I like the people coming back and forth and the kids smiling,” she said. “I’m having fun.”

Michael Dworetsky, owner of Music Hub, had his father, David, watch his table outside as he taught music classes at Happy Feet across the way. “Michael dropped the prices for music lessons so if kids are at home all summer they’ll have something fun to do,” David said. “This is my first Sidewalk Sale and I’m enjoying getting a suntan!”
