Excitement abounds and here comes Battle of the Classes

Posted

As the first semester came to a close in the end of January, marked by midterm week following Martin Luther King Jr. Day, spirits are high and there is excitement in the air at Hewlett High School. Seniors are beginning their final stretch of high school, and freshmen, sophomores and juniors are getting ready to finish their school years on a high note. With exciting events coming up, such as field trips, sporting events, Battle of the Classes and the senior fashion show, students are excited to finish up the year in a positive way.

Field trips, such as the Advanced Placement Chinese trip to Manhattan are planned in the coming weeks. Students will visit the China Institute in celebration of the Lunar New Year, and will learn how to paint authentic Chinese characters and eat authentic Chinese food.

Winter sports are in the peak of their seasons. Both girls’ and boys’ basketball, fencing, winter track, boys’ swimming, gymnastics and cheer are continuously putting in immense amounts of effort to succeed in their games, meets and competitions. Specifically, the boys’ and girls’ hoops teams will know soon if they made the playoffs, based on their success in the remainder of the season. The boys’ and girls’ track teams have been extremely successful in their seasons thus far as well. We wish the best of luck to the teams in the remainder of their seasons.

Battle of the Classes is the rebranded version of what was Sports Night. The Battle of the Classes will incorporate new events to allow more students who are not necessarily involved in sports to take part and enjoy the fun-filled afternoon. The event will feature dance performances from each grade, as per usual, as well as banners created by each grade. Some of the other events from Sports Night will be at Battle of the Classes, such as hockey and volleyball, but new events will replace the traditional three-on-three basketball among others. Students are looking forward to this event, which will take place following February break. Seniors are looking forward to the senior fashion show, which will take place in mid-March. The second annual fundraiser will help to raise money for senior class festivities. Sponsored by local businesses, student models will showcase clothing in front of an audience. In addition, items or services from local businesses and Hewlett High faculty will be auctioned off to the audience. The more popular items usually include the parking spots of the administration, which are generously donated.

The second semester is expected to bring a lot of excitement to Hewlett High School. Students and teachers alike are looking forward to these spirited and fun events, as well as a successful second half of the school year.
