Falling into exciting November events

It’s the beginning of November, Halloween has passed, leaves cover the lawns and the students at Hewlett High School are as busy as ever. The fall season at Hewlett High brings along many long-standing annual events, including the upcoming fall dance and school play.

Hewlett has already celebrated many special events. On Oct. 8, students, parents, teachers and community members joined together to celebrate the annual Homecoming Day Parade and football game. Beginning at Hewlett Elementary School, the parade participants and viewers marched down Broadway to the high school, where they then cheered on as the varsity football team defeated Glen Cove.

The parade — led by Grand Marshal Kevin Bayen, the former district director of Arts & Music — included the band, color guard and representatives from many sports teams and clubs. At the tail of the parade, grade representatives held class banners depicting their individual spirit week themes — all relating to Disney animated movies. The school spirit was tangible as many from the community celebrated the exciting day.

The high school is also gearing up for many more exciting events. On Nov. 7, the Leaders Core Club will host their annual fall dance, which is held in the gymnasium. Students with special needs from the district and neighboring districts are invited to attend this special dance.

Complete with fall decorations, fun snacks and a DJ, all of the students have the opportunity make new friends and enjoy the special night. This event complements the Leaders Core’s field day in the spring.

Additionally, Hewlett High’s Music Department is proud to present their annual play. This year, the students will be taking on the award-winning musical “Gypsy” to showcase their musical and theatrical talents. The musical follows the story of a mother who tries to make her two daughters famous for her own benefit. The play will be performed in the Hewlett High School auditorium on Wednesday, Nov. 16, Friday, Nov. 18 and two shows on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Chorus teacher Brian Vilegas and Hewlett alumna Ali Kresh will direct the upcoming performances. Chorus teacher Eric Williams is the musical director and Director of Art & Music Walter Lastowski oversees set construction. Tickets are currently on sale on the district website: www.hewlett-woodmere.net. The music department hopes that the community will continue to support their hard work at one of the upcoming performances.

Due to the success of homecoming and the upcoming aforementioned events, fall is an exciting time for students at Hewlett High School.
