Hewlett-Woodmere library director retires
After a 46-year library career, including nearly 28 at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, Susan O. de Sciora announced her retirement. She oversaw the library’s 1996 renovation (it’s most recent), the introduction of a wide range of technology for patrons such as free Wi-Fi and online services, along with a significant expansion of cultural activities. Sciora officially stepped down in March and Assistant Director William Ferro was named to replace her.

Police battle anti-Semitic graffiti
The Nassau County Police Department and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority joined forces on an initiative to fight the recurring anti-Semitic graffiti found at two Long Island Rail Road stations in the Five Towns.
Their joint program culminated in the Feb. 6 arrest of Jonathan Shuster, a Far Rockaway resident and student at Priority-1: Torah academy of Lawrence-Cedarhurst, an alternative yeshiva in Cedarhurst.
Keeping kids safe in the Five Towns
Having young people involved in educational and recreational activities and wanting to create a positive environment for them was the basis for longtime Inwood resident and Lawrenxe High School graduate Ilyassha Shivers establishing the Five Towns Far Rockaway Arts and Sports Alliance. The organization offers low to no cost athletic and educational programs, including baseball, wrestling, creative writing and art.
