Fetus found at Sanitary District 1 facility in Lawrence

Police term the incident a homicide

A fetus was found among debris at the Sanitary District 1 facility in Lawrence, district officials confirmed.

Nassau County police responded to a call at 2:21 p.m. from Sanitary District 1 at 2 Bay Blvd. in Lawrence concerning the possible remains of a baby. Police said the call came in as "a baby not breathing."

The fetus was found while trash was being separated at the facility following the day's pick up, said George Pappas, the district's superintendent. Police said the umbilical cord was still attached. Police would not reveal the baby's gender as of Tuesday night.

"Sanitary District 1 is continuing to cooperate with the police and assist in any way we can," Pappas said.

The police have termed the case a homicide and said an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Sanitary District 1 is one of the Town of Hempstead's five sanitary districts that provides municipal solid waste collection, recycling, transfer and disposal services to more than 50,000 residents and various commercial and institutional properties in the Villages of Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Lawrence, Woodmere, Woodsburgh and portions of the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Green Acres.
