Protected bird shot in Hewlett Bay Park

Eyewitnesses identified the alleged shooter of a yellow-crowned night heron,  a species protected by federal and state law, in Hewlett Bay Park.  The Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services are assisted the Nassau County SPCA with the investigation.

According to a man, who was at the park with his family on May 11, he heard what he thought were gunshots. He then saw another man holding what appeared to be a pistol and saw the bird fall from a tree. The heron was shot in his left wing.

The man took his children home and called 911.


The bird was taken to Central Veterinary Services in Valley Stream by the SPCA. After it underwent surgery, the Nassau County SPCA  said it is "guardedly hopeful" the bird, naned Ty by the staff, will recover. After which, Ty will be taken to a local sanctuary.

Arrests
LAWRENCE-Julian Lowery, 21, of Roosevelt, was arrested for shoplifting from a clothing store on Rockaway Turnpike at 10:30 a.m. on May, officials said.

Grand larceny — motor vehicle
LAWRENCE-Between 9 p.m. on May 6 and 9:40 a.m. on May 7, a white 1975 Chevrolet vehicle was stolen on Central Avenue, according to police.
INWOOD-A white 1999 Ford 350 pickup truck was reported stolen at 7:30 a.m. on May 6, police said.

Larceny from auto
NORTH WOODMERE-Property was taken from a man’s vehicle parked on Flanders Drive between 9 p.m. on April 30 and 9:30 a.m. on May 1, authorities said.
