Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department rescues motorists from vehicles stuck in flood waters

Heavy rains have brought up to three inches of rain to the Five Towns on Tuesday, officials said. The early morning tide contributed to flooding in the usual locations, including the intersection at Rockaway Turnpike and Peninsula Boulevard and motorists needing to be rescued.

In Cedarhurst, Parking Field No. 2 on Cedarhurst Avenue off of Central Avenue was pumped by village workers, and they will remain on the job until about 8 p.m. Mayor Andrew Parise said.

“We are a lot better off now than we were this morning,” Parise said. “Everything is draining pretty well.” Albemarle and Westminster roads were the worst hit, the mayor said.
Several streets were closed off and the tide came in two-feet higher than normal, according to Lawrence officials. Village workers ensured that all the basins and drains were clear to reduce flooding. The next high tide for Southeast Nassau is at 10:30 p.m.

Lawrence-Cedarhurst firefighters and Nassau County police each pulled a motorist from vehicles stuck on Meadow Lane and Marbridge Road in Lawrence at 1 p.m. Firefighters rescured another stranded driver on Causeaay near Barrett Road, also in Lawrence, at 3:25 p.m.

The rain is forecast to end around 7 p.m. Tuesday night. It is expected to be windy with temperatures in the low 40s.
