Getting into local government

Students from a few Five Towns high schools — David Renov Stahler Yeshiva for Boys, Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns And Rockaway, Lawrence, Rambam Mesivta and Stella K.

Abraham — the Torah Academy for Girls in Far Rockaway and Queens College have taken part in an ongoing internship program where the learn about all the facets of village government.

Spending time with Lawrence village officials, including Mayor Alex Edelman and Village Justice Donald Buchalter, the students are introduce to how the most local of government entities works and serves the community.

“It’s the government and court closest to them,” Edelman said, “and it’s of great value that they feel a part of it, and gain an understanding as to how local government impacts their lives.”
