Having Inwood at your fingertips

Hyperlocal news combined with easy access is what prompted Inwood residents Patty Vacchio, Pete Sobel, Mike DeRosa and Gary Mertz to create the website insideinwood.com.

“With the majority of people constantly on computers or Blackberrys we thought it would be advantageous and an accessible tool,” Vacchio said.

Though the site is up and running, not many people know it exists, Vacchio said, and a official launch was planned for last month, but the harsh winter weather has interfered with plans to distribute a 2011 poster-style calendar, a letter explaining the website and a postcard to every home in Inwood. They hope to deliver these materials this week.

Annually the group has distributed a paper version of the Inwood Calendar, but Vacchio said it has become financially difficult to support the calendar’s printing, so they decided to incorporate the calendar into the website.

The current site has nine categories that can be accessed including the home page, history of Inwood, the calendar, news, photos, resources that lists local organizations, personals that includes community items and job listings and contact information for the site, including email, phone and an address for

snail mail.

Like any other news and information gathering organization, insideinwood will reach out to local groups and post their events, meetings and activities, along with news.

“We feel this will allow people to participate in meetings and events that they may previously not have been aware of,” Sobel said. “Our news stories will keep people aware of local happenings and out-of-towners can no remain in touch with the town.”

Though the site is Inwood-based they plan on including school information, along with other news and happenings in the area. “We plan to reach out to the local schools for a journalism student to volunteer to write some school info,” Sobel said.
