On the first full day of Hanukkah and two days before Christmas, fourth-grade girls from the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach in Woodmere visited the residents of the New Nautilus Hotel in Atlantic Beach on Dec. 23, sang seven songs and danced as a part of a couple of those tunes.

Accompanied by HALB music teacher Tzila Schulman on keyboard, the girls crooned traditional songs of Hanukkah and a song written by renowned cantor Sol Zim, who is also a composer, songwriter, recording artist, performer, professor and lecturer. He is connected to the Hollis Hills Bayside Jewish Center in Queens.

“Mr. Gewirtz was calling schools and I was the only one who visited him here,” Schulman said. He taught me the song and I’m teaching it to the students. It’s about the angels of Shabbos.” … “That’s the power of music.” After the girls performed, they presented the residents with handmade holiday cards in the shape of a menorah.
