North Shore Animal League opens its doors – and hearts – this weekend to encourage animal lovers to welcome a new companion into the family, at its 16th annual 36-hour adoption event, Pet Adoptathon 2010. Beginning at 9 a.m. on May 1, North Shore Animal League America joins the 2,000 animal shelters around the world who will participate in a global pet adoption event, sponsored by Purina ONE®, to help save the lives of homeless pets.
The event kicks off at NSAL’s Port Washington location, at Pet Adoptathon national headquarters, with the “opening ceremony” at 8:45 a.m., headlined by renowned dog expert Cesar Millan, National Geographic Channel’s Dog Whisperer. Over 700 puppies, kittens, dogs and cats will be waiting at the shelter, ready to find a new family to call home.
Millan, who has helped dog owners world-wide, is a supporter of shelter adoptions, saying, “Millions of many wonderful animals end up in shelters each year and adoption provides these animals their second chance at life.” He added that he would like to convey a sense of contribution and appeal to the inner need for humanitarianism, “The act of adopting a dog creates balance and completeness in our lives by fulfilling the need in every human of contribution, if only for a moment. Really, who is saving who?”
The marathon event will feature fun for the entire family under the big tent. The many activities include performances both May 1 and May 2 by the Purina Incredible Dog Team, face painting, raffles, children’s games, arts and crafts, and balloon sculptures. Learn about animal communication and browse among the many products presented by the pet-related vendors who will be on hand with all sorts of supplies and goodies for your pet. Experts in training, veterinary care and grooming will be available both days to offer tips and advice.
Bring your newly adopted pet to “school” on Sunday. Free Pet Parenting Pre-School classes are being offered at noon and 2 p.m. to all attendees who adopt a puppy six months and younger over the weekend. Also on Sunday, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., all those adopting pets can stop by for a free professional photograph of their new four-legged family member, special coupons and discounts for the Pet Health Center, a dental cleaning kit, and other goodies.

Insights from Cesar Millan
“The more you learn about dog psychology, the better you will be able to connect with your canine companion!”

“Dogs are not humans. Before they receive love and affection, they need exercise, clear direction, and leadership. Giving them love alone doesn’t create balance in their lives. Be a pack leader!”

“Rehabilitating a dog is not about “fixing” it. It’s about you, the owner, creating the intention for what you want, not what you’re feeling. Dogs pick up on feelings of fear, doubt, or worry – and they will move to fill them by attempting to become dominant.”

“Practice unwavering leadership every day, especially on your walk. The energy you’re projecting internally is the message you’re sending to your dog.”

“Dedicate at least 45 minutes of time to the dog’s walk in the morning. Let the dog know you have a consistent pattern that you expect it to follow. Utilize your dog’s energy in a positive manner.”

“Don’t expect more from your dog(s) than your own children. Dogs need discipline, too. Give them rules, boundaries, and limitations as well as love.”

“Avoid nurturing your dog’s fears or unstable mind. Imagine a successful scenario and hold it in your mind when dealing with your dog.”

“You are the source of your dog’s energy. You are the role model.”
