Helping their neighbors through hoops

Five Towns Community Chest, the Lawrence Athletic Department and Herald Newspapers sponsored the 14th annual Five Towns Community Chest Youth Board 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Lawrence High School on March 27.

Dedicated to the memory of Adam Barsel, a Hewlett High School student killed in a car accident nearly 11 years ago. His mother Rhonda Barsel is a physical education teacher at Lawrence Middle School and coaches the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams.

Overall more than 100 participated in the tournament in three divisions, including students from Lawrence and Hewlett high schools, Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, guests from East Hills and the Five Towns Community Center’s Hard Knox basketball club. The event raised more than $20,000 to benefit the Adam Barsel Scholarship Fund at Hewlett High School and several other charities.
