Residents in several special districts went to the polls to elect commissioners on Dec. 12.

A fire district is a political entity that purchases the equipment for fire departments within their established budget.

Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue

Robin Trott, 24-year member of Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue ran unopposed for the Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue District Commissioner spot earning 86 votes. Trott is the woman commissioner for the first-responder organization.

She has served as an emergency medical technician for 23 years, but looks forward to the commissioner role as she pulls back from those tasks, she said.

“I can still serve the community and that’s what’s really important to me,” Trott said previously.

Hewlett Bay Fire District

Joseph Whitney, a 33-year member of the Hewlett Fire Department, won the Hewlett Bay Fire District Commissioner race with 26 votes with no opposition.

Whitney will serve a five-year term. He said he wants to continue the work done from his current term, managing the district in a way that helps the taxpayers and members for necessary protection, he said.

“What I’m looking to do is continue with our present pathway, we’re in a really good spot,” Whitney said previously.

Inwood Fire District

Mark Rolon, a 43-year member of the Inwood Fire Department earned the Inwood Fire District commissioner spot with 71 votes. Rolon will take the spot of Dominic Andreno, who was elected in 2018, but earned 29 votes in this election.

Rolon, former lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and chief of department was fire commissioner from 2007 to 2017.

Meadowmere Park Fire District

Ruth Samuelson will serve the next five-year term as a Meadowmere Park Fire District commissioner.

Samuelson earned 24 votes and will continue her role, which she had served for over 30 years. She hopes to see the district and department grow in membership and make improvements to the Meadowmere Fire House, she said. A write-in candidate received 10 votes, fire district officials said.

North Lawrence Fire District

Joel Krinsky, a 15-year North Lawerence resident, was elected commissioner.

He had filled the seat of a commissioner who resigned, for a one-year term, but now will be a commissioner for the full five-year term.

Krinsky owns a local car body shop.

Woodmere Fire District

David Stern will continue serving as Woodmere Fire District Commissioner after receiving 42 votes, with two going to write-ins. He will serve a five-year term, following a 20-year stint, first earning the position in 2003.

“It’s a big part of my ethos to serve and help the community protect itself,” he said previously.

He hopes to continue improving cyber security due to the districts heavy reliance on technology, he said.
