Keeping programs going is their focus

Three incumbent Hewlett-Woodmere Board of Education trustees, Dr. Jonathan Altus, Melissa Gates and Stephen Witt, are running for re-election without opposition. The election is May 19. All terms are three years.

Altus, who is running for his second term, remembers three years ago, when CPR courses as an initiative program were begun at the high school level. “I’m always very proud of the new student initiatives we are able to introduce every year,” he said. “CPR classes were implemented during my first year on the board, and I’m personally very proud. Years from now, those students will be able to save lives.”

Going forward his focus is on the programs that he thinks help students succeed.

“I’m very proud of our robotics teams, and our science and technology developments,” he said. “With programs like these, I hope the Common Core mandates that affect our district will not distract from our mission. It’s not tests; it’s the programs that we develop when we expand our horizons that also help expand graduation rates here at the high school and the college level.”

Running for a second term, Gates believes she’s been an effective board member and wants to serve as the district changes superintendents. “I truly enjoy all that I have been doing as a board member and feel that three years is just not enough,” she said. “I also believe that during this time of transitioning to a new superintendent, it is important to have a stable board. I was one of seven making the decision of who to hire and I would like to see it through.”
