Hewlett-Woodmere library has useful 'things'

Libraries, and Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library is no exception, have always been filled with books and in more contemporary times bustling with concerts and programs, now HWPL has become a “Library of Things.”

Things ranging from a bird watching kit (two pairs of binoculars, and a trio of Long Island birding books,) Brain Quest games, mobile wireless hotspots and video game consoles are just a few of the items now available to borrow from HWPL’s Library of Things.

“We’re always looking to be on the cutting edge of what a library can offer to our community,” James Hartmann, the library’s head of user experience and technology said in a news release.

“Everybody knows we have books and movies, but when I tell people we offer book club kits, museum passes and assorted pieces of tech to borrow, they’re always surprised!”

A Library of Things is any collection of objects loaned, and any organization that practices the loaning. Items occasionally includes kitchen appliances, tools, gardening equipment and seeds, electronics, toys and games, art, science kits, craft supplies, musical instruments, and recreational equipment.

Especially appropriate are objects that are useful but cumbersome to store, such as specialized cookware or niche technology items. Collections vary widely but go far beyond the books, journals and media that have been the main focus of traditional libraries.
