Hewlett-Woodmere School District budget approved; May, Critti win re-election

In what will be remembered as the mail-in ballot election due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Hewlett-Woodmere School District proposed budget passed and two incumbent board of education trustees were re-elected.

The district's proposed budget of $126,882,632 passed by a vote of 2,774 to 2,021. It is a 2.89 percent increase from the current budget of $123.3 million. The 2.89 percent increase is in line with the state’s tax levy increase. 

Proposition two, which asked residents to allow the district to use $2 million from the Hewlett-Woodmere Long Range Capital Reserve Fund established in 2017, to complete a variety of maintenance projects across the district, passed by a vote of 3,238 to 1,572.

Hewlett-Woodmere school board incumbents Cheryl May and Paul Critti were re-elected to three-year terms, with 3,380 votes each. Write-in candidate Dr. Kenneth Sicklick received 1,041 votes.

Proposition No. 3 is the proposed Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library budget of $6,620,961 passed by a vote of 3,021 to 1,786. This is a $53,515 increase from the current budget. The cost of library materials, resources and services is proposed at $893,520, a $40,000 uptick from current costs.I ncumbent library trustee Leslie Eisenberg was re-elected in an uncontested race with 3,535 votes.
