The Hewlett-Woodmere School District kicked off the 2011-2012 school year by officially welcoming two new school board members, Cheryl May and Scott McInnes, at their July 12 meeting.

May, McInnes and Superintendent Dr. Joyce Bisso were given the oath of office at the beginning of the meeting followed by the election of Board of Education president and vice president. Stephanie Gould will remain as board president and Stephen Witt will also continue as BOE vice president.

Although students are on summer vacation, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Laura Seinfeld updated the board and residents in attendance about workshops and conferences teachers have been attending to enrich their learning.

Central Council PTA Co-Presidents Melissa Gates and Mitchell Greebel, who took over for May, congratulated and welcomed May and McInnes to the board.

May, who had to step down from her position as co-president of Central Council PTA, said she is on the Long Range Transportation, Policy, Recreation and Athletic Facility and PTA committees. She said she is looking forward to continuing her involvement with the PTA in a different position. “I can’t give that up, it’s like an addiction,” May said of the PTA.

McInnes is on the Special Education, Buildings and Grounds, Policy, Legislative and Public and Private Schools committees. While he did not specify a committee he’s looking forward to working on the most, he said, “I’m eager to absorb all I can.”

Hewlett-Woodmere School District’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Woodmere Education Center Auditorium.
