No one was injured but the house at 11 Wedgewood Lane in Lawrence was severely damaged after an early morning fire ripped through the 4,506-square-foot colonial-style home last Thursday.

The homeowners called 911 at 12:41 a.m. after the husband heard what sounded like an explosion in the back of the downstairs portion of the house, said Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Chief Joseph Sperber.

LCFD firefighters, including Sperber, were on the scene minutes later. Both the man and his wife were outside the house when the firefighters arrived. After 30 minutes the firefighters, including Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere departments, had the fire under control. The firefighters were on the scene for two hours.

A hot tub unit located in the sunroom in the back of the first floor of the home was the origin of the fire, Sperber said. The Nassau County Fire Marshal determined the fire was not suspicious. However, there was extensive damage to the house, Sperber said.

“The firefighters did an outstanding job, limiting the damage as best as possible, Sperber said.

Meadowmere Fire Department served, as the standby company for the LCFD and Valley Stream and Long Beach were the relief companies.
