It’s D, all of the above

Posted

January is a) the first month of the year, b) cold, c) midterm month, or d) all of the above? Midterms. An endless array of bubbled answers forming an indecipherable code to success. We second-guess answers and wonder if we’ve made the right choices. They indicate not only what we have forgotten, but that we have made it halfway through the year. We stay up late, dig up old notes from the abyss of our backpacks, and cram six months of knowledge back into our heads.

While I’m busy remembering math equations and history dates, I’m also extremely aware that my senior year is halfway over. I’m closer to the end than I’ve ever been. In a few short months, I will be back in Hessel Hall only, this time, I won’t be watching the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. assembly. I will be graduating and walking away from my time as a high school student forever.

For now, I participate in the mania of midterms. At this time next week, the entire high school will be hunched over desks in neat little rows, tapping pencils nervously on papers. But even as the dark cloud of midterms looms overheard, the school is buzzing with activity.

Last weekend, the drama department produced “God’s Favorite.” Cast members worked tirelessly during the past few months to bring Neil Simon’s play to life. The end-product was a talented performance that makes us even more excited for the upcoming spring musical.

While some found stardom on the stage last week, the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams found it on the courts. The boys recently celebrated victories against Evangel Christian and St. Demetrious, while the girls also earned back-to-back wins. The rest of the season is looking bright for both teams, each with a passion for the game to rival even its skill.

As we approach midterms, the letters a, b, c, and d haunt our dreams, no matter our level of preparation. The tests themselves are not as daunting as what they signify: A school year half-completed and a new future just around the corner. Soon basketball games or school plays will just be a memory we take with us when we leave. So when asked if we are a) excited, b) scared, c) anxious, or d) all of the above, the answer will be d. Always.
