Pink T-shirts, pink socks and a variety of snacks and beverages were sold and second-grade boys from the Hewlett-Lawrence Soccer Club, Inwood, Lynbrook and Levittown player four soccer games at Lawrence Middle School in the Nassau Development Program Breast Cancer fundraising tournament last Sunday.

Executive board member Chris Benzing said the club looked to raise about $1,000 that will be donated to the 1 in 9 Long Island Beast Cancer Coalition at Hewlett House in Hewlett. The Hewlett U8 team wore pink socks and Benzing said the older travel teams wear them throughout the month, he said. “It is a way of honoring and supporting all those with breast cancer,” Benzing said. “We want the boys to learn sportsmanship and team play. It’s a way to bring these towns together.”

Participants received medals for best goalie, striker defender and team scorer.

The club teamed with Soccer Angels, a South Shore-based organization established by former soccer player and now trainer Kelly Wright. A native of England, Wright’s group held its third annual adult soccer game at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, also on Oct. 11. The last two years they raised $4,500 and hoped to raise $3,000 this year that will also be donated to 1 in 9, Wright said.
