Knocking one out of the park

With the Yankees making a run toward another World Series championship, the Knights of Columbus recently hosted the Dom Scavuzzo Memorial Baseball Academy at Grant Park.

Over 65 children from Hewlett-Woodmere Little League took part in the event honoring Scavuzzo, a past grand knight and an active member at St. Joseph's Church in Hewlett. Coach Bart Hernandez and assistant coaches Shannon Siegal, Luch Morello and Jason Cecchetelli taught the youngsters baseball skills, including hitting, fielding, throwing, and base-running.

Organizers of the event included Knights of Columbus members, Anthony Santiago, Serafino Maiorano and Domiano Coraci, the current grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, Father Farrel Council 5962.

“We want to make Hewlett-Woodmere a baseball community again,” Maiorano said. “We want to teach kids at a young age so baseball can become big in our town again.”
