The newly established Five Towns Far Rockaway Arts and Sports Alliance hosted a Kwanzaa celebration at the Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence on Dec. 26.

Kwanzaa honors African heritage, and is observed from Dec. 26 to New Year’s Day. It culminates with a feast and gift giving. It was created by Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies, and first celebrated in 1966-’67.

At the Five Towns event, the Sankoffa Drummers of the Wings of Faith Ministries in Inwood and a spoken-word author performed. Alliance founder Ilyassha Shivers and Bishop Warren C. Shivers spoke.
