Lawrence High School junior Xian Scott spreads knowledge to his peers

Lawrence High School junior Xian Scott resident is launching a nonprofit called Eclipse Generation that he hopes will give fellow students guidance on life beyond high school by offering tutoring, career exploration, college advising and financial literacy guidance.

“I am creating this nonprofit because I would like to make sure that students can be successful in their adult life,” said Scott, a North Woodmere resident. “I’ve watched many videos, seminars, spoken to college students and admissions counselors and I would like to share the information I’ve gained. I overall just would like to help students succeed in their academic career endeavors.”

Scott said the tutoring aspect will be for students in grades two to 11 on a variety of subjects ranging from math to social studies. “The tutoring will be 45-minutes over Google Meet,” he said. “If we don’t have tutors for a certain subject, we will create an in-depth study guide for the subject.”

Career exploration will include guest speakers discussing their profession for roughly 45 minutes, and college advising will offer advice to high school students on preparing for college.

“Through the individualized consulting, consultants will inform students about opportunities tailored only to them,” Scott said. “Consultants will be juniors and seniors who have done extensive research, are at the top of their class, have been accepted to competitive summer programs and are leaders in their school community.”

He noted how the services can also be beneficial to high school students who may not even have future plans for higher education. “Our financial literacy seminars focus on the basics of investing and the stock market,” Scott said. “No matter what job you pursue in the future, you will need to know how to manage your finances.”

Audrey Scott, Xian’s mother, noted how she is not surprised that her son came up with a nonprofit like Eclipse Generation. “I wasn’t surprised because this is just his character,” Audrey said. “Xian is a self-starter, he is very disciplined and focused.”

The selfishness of the initiative is what Audrey loves the most about it. “The wonderful thing about Xian is that he’s not just interested in his future, but he’s also interested in the future of other students,” she said. “When Xian has big plans, he'll do the research, put the time in and do whatever’s necessary to accomplish his goals.”

For Scott, he wants his peers to gain more knowledge in and out of the classroom. “The whole goal is to want students not to go into higher education, but just to learn things in general,” he said. “I want to spark something in them to motivate them to learn.”
