Lawrence Lately: Sports Night and DECA winners generate buzz

Posted

Lawrence High School students have realized that changes will occur next school year, including the change from a nine period school day to eight. Discussions about this have ended and there are other things to talk about.

The 51st annual Girls Sports Night! This year the themes were Golden West Coast and Blue East Coast. The head captains for Gold were Nicole Gartner and Michelle Vainblat and the head captains for Blue were Juliana Villanella and Jeanine Markey.

The girls had approximately two months to prepare for this event. Irene Bayeva was in charge of all things relating to Sports Night. During these two months Bayeva was seen running around the halls after school and making sure the two teams had everything they needed and displayed good sportsmanship. Even though Bayeva stayed in school very late for Sports Night practices, she still managed to come to school in the mornings and teach her physics classes.

Practice after practice finally led to the big day. On March 31, the two teams competed in various events. Many students and teachers came to support the girls who competed that night. Of course the favorite events of the night had to be the step and dance performances. Oh and draping (covering a person in newspaper) was an exciting event for many as well.

This year the winning team was Golden West Coast. Gartner said, “I remember being a freshmen and already creating a team with my friends. Being able to bring that team to life was so much fun. The coast collided and it was definitely a party in the USA.” Villanella said, “I enjoyed myself Saturday night. Regardless of the outcome, I am glad I was given the opportunity to be one of the head captains for Blue East Coast. All of the girls, involved on both teams, worked really hard to make Sports Night a fun and enjoyable event and I hope everyone that came to support girls Sports Night enjoyed it!”

Now that all of the hectic practices and the fun-filled drama are over, this is what Nyasia Robertson, the step captain for Gold, said, “Now that Sports Night is over I am glad to be able to say that I was a part of it!”

I’m sure that all of the people associated with Sports Night were glad to be a part of it.

Sports Night took the Lawrence High School spotlight for awhile, but let’s not forget the students who went to Rochester in early March for the New York State Career Conference 2012. This year three students from the high school made it to the DECA International Career Development Conference. Lauren Abecassis, Derek Jacobs, and Samuel Sussman will be going to this conference which will be held in Utah this year. Wishing these students the best of luck!

This is what Lawrence students have been up to for the past few weeks. Now it’s spring break time.
