Potato latkes, dreidels and gelt (the chocolate coins given to children) were handed out by the Chabad of Hewlett as the Jewish organization took part in the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association menorah lighting at the Triangle by Broadway and West Broadway last Sunday, the first night of Hanukkah.
Celebrated for eight days, Hanukkah marks the miracle of the oil that was supposed last for only one day it but lit the menorah in the Holy Temple for eight days. The holiday, known as the Festival of Lights, also marks a military triumph as the ancient Hebrews led by the Maccabee family defeated the Syrian-Greeks in battle.
