Little doctors draw blood at Lawrence Middle School

Posted

Fifth-graders at Lawrence Middle School ran the school’s first blood on May 10 with help from Long Island Blood Services (LIBS). Thirty-two students volunteered their time for the school to assist in saving lives.

They decorated the blood donation site, signed up family members, friends, and faculty, and greeted each donor with a smile, stickers, a bracelet and a note of thanks.

The blood drive was made possible by the Little Doctors Program, which provided a unique opportunity for the students to learn about blood and its use in the community. The students learned how to build leadership and teamwork skills by helping to organize the blood drive.

Additionally, during science class, the fifth-grade students had guest speakers from the Long Island Blood Services teach them about the components of their circulatory system. They learned about blood types, blood components and their purpose, who needs blood, and organizing a blood drive.

LIBS have been providing life-saving blood products and services to 50 hospitals throughout Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens for 40 years.
