Every weekday after school, the sound of music fills the air as students at Hewlett High School practice for their upcoming musical, “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Hewlett High’s musicals are a source of excitement for the entire community every year. It all began in 1995, with the production of “Carousel.”

From then on, students, faculty, and staff all enjoy contributing to the creation of these performances, from “Mamma Mia” to “Annie Get Your Gun.”

Though there was no production last year due to the pandemic, the cast and crew are ready to bring in all of the energy to this year’s performance.

“Little Shop of Horrors” follows the story of Seymour, a flower shop store assistant, and an abnormal plant he finds that only consumes human flesh and blood. The plant brings attention to Seymour’s business, while the plant’s desire for meat continues to grow.

With iconic songs like the “Little Shops of Horrors Prologue” theme and “Somewhere That’s Green,” the musical is sure to include memorable tunes that bring joy to those who listen.

Various groups of people have contributed to the production of the musical, from the cast, stage crew, pit orchestra, faculty and staff.

Immediately after school, rehearsals begin with stage crew building the sets, music teachers advising the cast, along with actors and actresses practicing their dance routines in the auditorium.

The process of preparing a musical takes a lot of hard work that many Hewlett students are willing to dedicate, whilst enjoying themselves along the way with the power of music.

Hewlett’s musicals serve as fun learning experiences for all those involved, including senior Isabelle Borohov, student director of the musical.

“I’ve always loved being a part of the musicals since I was in sixth grade and I love the new perspective student directing has given me! I’ve gotten the opportunity to get to know and work with everyone from the cast, crew, pit, and faculty and we are all so excited for the show,” Borohov said.

The musical is scheduled to premiere on Nov. 17, with additional shows on Nov. 19 and 20. Tickets go on sale on Nov. 1, with the excitement continuing to build up until then.
