A team of 16-year-old boys representing the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside won the bronze medal in basketball at the 2012 JCC Maccabi Games held in Rockland County from Aug. 12 to 17.

Coached by Billy and Dean Schneider and Ron Kaminer, the squad included Hewlett High School students Avery Feldman and Josh Netto-Rosen, Adar Benzaken, Mark Spivak and Alec Schonfeld who attend the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, North Shore Hebrew Academy students Avery Lubin, Josh Cohen and Benjy Hakakian, along with Cody Zafran from East Meadow High School.

In addition, Friedberg JCC representatives Ariel Eisenberg of North Woodmere won the silver in tennis and West Hempstead Akiva Ackerman won gold medals in both singles and doubles in table tennis.

The Maccabi Games are an Olympic-style sports competition held annually in the summer in North America. In its 30th year, the event is the largest organized athletic program for Jewish teenagers in the word. Each summer, more than 5,000 Jewish teens take part in the games and over 100,000 have participated since 1982.

Though centered on sports, the overall event also seeks to promote community involvement, teamwork and Jewish pride. Positive memories, life lessons and lasting friendships are also part of the games.

The JCC Maccabi Games is a program of the Jewish Community Center Association of North America with support from Maccabi World Union, Maccabi Canada and Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel.
