Helen M. Sandhaus, former Hewlett Bay Park resident, dies at 86

Helen M. Sandhaus, formerly of Hewlett Bay Park and Malverne, died peacefully on August 21 in Lancaster, PA. She was 86.

Afflicted by tuberculosis in her teens, Helen met her future husband, Dr. Harold (Sandy) Sandhaus, as her physician while she was “cured” at the Trudeau Sanitarium in Saranac Lake, N.Y. They married in 1947 after Dr. Sandhaus’ return from his duties as a physician in the European Theater of the Second World War.

Always with her husband, Helen made a home and raised their young family during Dr. Sandhaus’ residencies in Cleveland, Ohio, and Houston, Texas. Dr. Sandhaus then practiced internal medicine for many years in Valley Stream and was one of six original founders of the former Franklin General Hospital, where Helen spearheaded much fund raising and helped organize and run the Franklin General Thrift Shop in Valley Stream. She was a former president of the League of Women Voters of the Greater Five Towns and was active in Hadassah. Married for 58 years, they lived in Hewlett until Dr. Sandhaus’ death in 2005.

Helen was the daughter of the late Aaron and Ruth Newmark of Brooklyn and Jamaica Estates. She is survived by her three children; Dr. Robert A. Sandhaus of Denver, Colo., Jody Sandhaus Malinverni of Pound Ridge, N.Y., Jane Sandhaus-Packer of Lancaster, Penn., and their spouses. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren. There was a service in celebration of her life on August 23 in Lancaster, Penn. The family requests that donations in Helen Sandhaus’ memory be made to the Historic Saranac Lake Fund, ACT, PO Box 288, Lake Placid, N.Y. 12946.
