National Council marks Black History Month

Founder's Day program held at Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence

On Feb. 17, the , Inc. held their annual Black History Program at the Five Towns Community Center. There were performances, and speeches delivered by Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, and Melvin Harris Jr., public liaison coordinator, from the Nassau County Office of the County Executive.

Annie Reyes, the cultural events chairperson, performed a libation ceremony to honor the ancestors. The D.I.V.A.S. and Dudes, a youth group associated with the Section, not only performed a theatrical recitation, they also, provided pictures of early inventions such as the mop, ironing board, and traffic light.

There was a candlelight celebration in honor of the Organizations Founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, lead by Kemaaleka Clarke-Davidson. The Section’s president, Evelyn Jackson, received a Certificate of Recognition, which was presented to the Nassau County Section on the occasion of Founder’s Day Black History Celebration at the Five towns Community Center.

The Town of Hempstead recognized the Nassau County Section, in particular, by stating that the National Council of Negro Women is appreciated for the support it provides to women and children through economic empowerment, health and fitness, educational and community service. There was also a heartfelt appreciation for its significant contributions to the well being of those of our residents in need of assistance.

Membership is open to all and annual dues are $30. Meetings are held every third Friday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Five Towns Community Center, located at 270 Lawrence Ave. in Lawrence. Email nasncnw@hotmail.com for more information.
