John F. Kennedy International Airport that is a hop, skip and a jump from the Five Towns reported 12.6 inches of snow on Saturday at 7 p.m. Plowing the snow and cleaning up the roadways and street was made much more difficult as winds howled up to 45 mph.

Plowing in Cedarhurst began at 4 a.m. on Saturday and continued through 9 p.m., said Mayor Benjamin Weinstock. He noted that the wind was “fierce.” “The village is completely plowed and salted,” he said, adding that one truck circled Cedarhurst doing spot plowing on Sunday.

On Monday, the village again plowed the roads after resident left for work to clean up the residual snow that was most likely tossed onto the roadways after the shoveling or snowblowing was done., Weinstock said.

In Lawrence, village officials said that cleanup was completed on Sunday. The salters were out to reduce the amount of ice on the roads. Village officials requested that anyone who had to shovel to move the snow to the side of a street and not onto the roadway,

Atlantic Beach Mayor George Pappas said the  “‘village is clean” on Sunday and the Atlantic Beach Bridge and the portion of the Nassau Expressway nearest to the bridge had been plowed “to the pavement” by the county and state, respectively.

Pappas, who is the superintendent of Sanitary District 1, also asked residents to clear a path and place their trash and recyclable cans out in front of their homes  "for the safety of the employees." He said there will no interruption of service as pickups will be on the regular Monday to Friday schedule this week.

Life returned to normal after the governor’s declared state of emergency on Friday. The  Long Island Rail Road resumed regularly scheduled service on Sunday after shutting service down on Saturday. Nassau Inter-County Express bus service also halted service on Saturday, resumed limited service later and then became fully operational on Sunday. Town of Hempstead
