Number 6 mistakenly listed as polling place

The Nassau County Board of Elections (BOE) sent out postcards to District 15 residents over the past few weeks that erroneously said they should cast their votes on Election Day at the Number Six School, which was closed over the summer. A BOE representative said it was a mechanical error.

“Basically, what’s happened is an automatic list is generated and sent out to everyone,” said the representative. The BOE plans to send out another card with the proper location on it, and will also post a notice at the Number Six School on Election Day directing voters to the new location. “We will make sure everyone will go to the right polling location.” The representative added, “We're aware [Number Six School] is closed. Our planning department is looking for another location.”

Lawrence Superintendent Dr. John Fitzsimons said that the mailed notice was clearly a mistake since there is no access to the Number Six School facility. “The building has been buttoned up, it’s closed,” he said. “The only person in there is our construction manager. I don’t think it would even be safe to have people go in there.”

Lisa Gray, who received an incorrect card from the BOE, was glad the confusion has been cleared up. “I’m happy that the Nassau Herald looked into this problem,” she said, “and that the Board of Elections will send out the correct information for us to know where to vote.”
