Carol Dysinger, a New York University filmmaker who won an Oscar for Best Short Documentary at this year’s Academy Awards for co-directing with Elena Andreicheva “Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone, (If You’re a Girl)” is the guest speaker at the NCJW-Peninsula Section at a showing of “The Distant Barking of Dogs,” a documentary about the war in Ukraine, on Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m., at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, 1125 Broadway in Hewlett.

Simon Lereng Wilmont’s deservingly Oscar-shortlisted documentary film evocatively filters the Russo-Ukrainian conflict through the shifting perspective of a pre-adolescent boy. For young Oleg Afanasyev, orphaned and living in Hnutove village in Ukraine with his wily, resilient grandmother Alexandra, “The Distant Barking of Dogs” weaves a coming-of-age narrative into its morally urgent anti-war tableau. The film’s running time is 91 minutes.

Library district residents can pick up free tickets at HWPL. Non-district residents and members of NCJW Peninsula Section, can call the NCJW office to reserve a ticket at (516) 569-3660, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
