Peninsula Public Library in Lawrence celebrates its summer readers

North Woodmere resident Shmuel Levkovich, 10, tossed bean bags toward a corn hole board, while other children hula hooped, drew pictures with chalk on the asphalt or picked free books from a few bins outside of Peninsula Public Library at its end of summer reading program party on Sept. 3.

Postponed a day because of rain, the Thursday get together was much smaller than in previous years. A combination of the enduring coronavirus pandemic, the stuttered start to the school year and being Labor Day weekend, a last chance for some days away from home.

Pat Murphy, the new children's librarian, Grace Bazile and Katie Mirro made sure all the kids received tote bags with I Love Reading stenciled outside and goodies inside.

Library Director Carolynn Matulewicz said that PPL will open its doors again later in the month by appointment with two allowed per hour. Each person will have 30 minutes to choose material.

For the first time since mid-March, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library will be resuming in-person services and Grab and Go Borrowing beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Visitors are required to wear masks and their stay cannot exceed 30 minutes. There will be no seating, or access to computers or study rooms at this time.
