Peninsula Public Library in Lawrence holds book giveaway

The weather finally cooperated for a Peninsula Public Library book giveaway, said library Director Carolynn Matulewicz outside the Central Avenue building in Lawrence as several book lovers grazed on a day that could be described as a Top Ten day.

“I wanted to hold the book giveaways every Friday in July but it rained,”  Matulewicz said, “then I held it last Thursday and it was so hot, but today is great.”

Word of mouth through Facebook brought many book lovers to the giveaway that had thousands of older books of varied genres and videos.

The coronavirus pandemic reduced the number of children involved in PPL’s annual summer reading program, Matulewicz said, but the end of program party is slated for Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m., on the library's front lawn.

She did say that the library is aiming for the middle of next month allow patrons by appointment to have 30 minutes to browse and check out books. Matulewicz said that two people would be allowed per hour, adding that the contactless outside pickup has been a success.

“It’s alleviated our parking problem,” she said, with a smile. Peninsula Public Library, considered the smallest library by square-footage in Nassau County, has only 23 parking spaces.
