Picking up the trash from beaches in Atlantic Beach

Volunteers collected nearly 40 bags of debris and at least one car tire as they walked the entire Village of Atlantic Beach shoreline and the beach entrances during an Earth Day cleanup on April 22.

Held to raise awareness for everyone not to litter the beaches and bring the community together, according to Mayor George Pappas, Girl Scouts, families, friends and elected officials took part in the event.

Earth Day, began 48 years ago as million of people protested the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development. In the same year, 1970, the federal government created the Environmental Protection Agency and enacted environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and many others.
