Remembering 9/11 in Hewlett

Posted

On Friday, September 11, students, faculty and staff members at Hewlett Elementary School assembled in the auditorium to commemorate the eighth anniversary of 9/11. The Hewlett Elementary students joined with communities all across the country in paying tribute to those who lost their lives, and in honor of those who risked their lives helping others.

Mr. Richard Skellington, whose three children attended Hewlett Elementary School, joined in the ceremony as he does every year on 9/11. Skellington, who is with Engine Company 305 in Forest Hills, is a local hero as he was at Ground Zero on that fateful day eight years ago. The students, faculty and staff took a moment to honor him and all the men and women in uniform who serve our community and country.

Fifth graders read selections from This Place I Know: Poems of Comfort, edited by Georgia Heard. Then, all in attendance observed a moment of silence. The program concluded with the singing of “Until We Meet Again,” an Irish blessing that has been set to original music by Hewlett Elementary School music teacher Mr. Tom Sugar.
