Resolving to be better students, better people

“And now let us welcome the new year, full of things that never were.” — Rainer Maria Rilk

As Lawrence High School students returned back to school in the new year, re-energized after the winter break, they began to think about their work so far, and made new resolutions in order to achieve their academic goals. A new beginning offered them a chance to reflect and determine what habits and mindsets needed to be changed or strengthened for future academic and personal growth.

Lawrence seniors having successfully submitted their college applications in time to meet deadlines (with the help of their amazing guidance counselors), made New Year’s resolutions not to succumb to senioritis. They hope to finish their last year at school strong by maintaining their grades and taking part in clubs and extracurricular activities. They expect to look back with fondness and pride at the four years they had in high school.

Senior Ethan Breban made a resolution that he felt would not only help him focus for the midterm exams but also help him do well the remainder of the school year. “I’m going to improve my concentration and mental skills,” he said.

“I want to be more aware of what’s happening, especially during class. I want to focus less on the distractions and more on my grades. This is my senior year and colleges are going to notice if I start slacking and that’s not going to look good. I will be more productive by powering off my phone when I don’t need it. I’m going to start participating more in class and start showing my full attention towards my schoolwork.”

Other New Year’s resolutions made by students include overcoming procrastination and setting realistic goals, which would help them have a constructive school year. “I definitely want to get rid of my bad habit of procrastinating,” Daniel Vasquez said. “I usually end up pulling all-nighters or staying up late for a test or project the next day. That’s going to change. Maybe, I’ll try the spacing effect and spread my work out over time.”

When making resolutions for the new year, LHS students set realistic and manageable goals. “My horse is my number one best friend,” senior Priscilla Detweiler said, “it’s unfortunate that we live so far away from each other. Having to study all the time and due to my extracurricular activities, I’m not able to see Holly as much as I would like to. My goal this year is to manage my time better and make sure the distance doesn't affect us. I’m definitely going to be spending more time with her.”

Perry Vacchio resolved to take steps to reduce stress, “I want to learn how to cope with my stress from school, studying, and especially these college applications,” Vacchio said. Maybe I’ll try some yoga or meditation. I may even find a support system to lean on or maybe just start listening to calm, relaxing music.”

By following through with their New Year’s resolutions, Lawrence High students, supported and motivated as usual by their inspiring teachers, look forward to achieving an enriching, productive and fun-filled school year.
