Sanitary District 1, the entity responsible for collecting the trash and recyclables in the Five Towns and surrounding communities will hold a shredding and e-waste event on Sunday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 9 Bay Boulevard in Lawrence.
A high-capacity shredder will be available for resident to destroy outdated personal documents such as pre-approved credit card offers, bank statement, pay stubs or tax returns. The district has partnered with GreenChip to safely recycle any unwanted electronics and e-waste.
“This gives us a chance to teach our neighbors how to properly destroy items which contain sensitive information,” said District Commissioner Irving Kaminetsky.
GreenChip erases personal information on recyclable items in compliance with Department of Defense and other industry standards. GreenChip’s system guarantees that no storage device leaves a facility with recoverable data.
“We’ll also remind residents they can cut down on the amount of junk mail they receive by enrolling in the paperless option for bills and statements or unsubscribing to unwanted mailing,” said Commissioner Frank Argent.
Approximately 16,000 residential and commercial properties are serviced by the sanitary district in the villages of Cedarhurst, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Lawrence and Woodsburgh, as well as the hamlets of Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere and portions of the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Millbrook.
