Staging a Covid-friendly sense of normalcy

On April 23, Lawrence Woodmere Academy middle and high school students performed LWA’s first ever Covid-friendly musical. The students performed “High School Musical” in front of a live and virtual audience.

This past year was a trying time for all performing arts students because of all the new adjustments that had to be made for them to have the show and to incorporate both in-school and virtual students.

“From the perspective of looking back on the show, I can say I am so glad that we did it,’ said Tasha Partee, who directed the play. “The show was not only an occasion to come together and work toward a common goal, but it ultimately reminded us that nothing can stop a group of people who are determined. I am so proud of each and every student involved.

"As we cast our eyes to future shows, our horizons have broadened. Bringing ‘High School Musical’ to life before a live audience during a global pandemic has taught us that we can achieve anything! We are already planning for next year!”

Partee was able to direct an amazing show that was able to incorporate both in school and remote students by using projections. By projecting the remote student onto the stage everyone was able to feel included even from the comfort of their own homes.

Many of LWA’s performing arts students were also very happy about the show’s outcome. “The musical was one of the greatest experiences of my life,” said senior Isable Manne. “It was my first time playing a lead role ever and I’m so glad that the school took a chance on me for that. I’m so proud of everyone involved and how hard we worked together for it to become a success.”

Sophomore Sammy Schwartz said, “ I was really happy that we were able to put on a show during a global pandemic. It was definitely different with all the Covid restrictions but ended up being amazing.”
The success of LWA’s first Covid-friendly show brought hope for future musicals and helped the LWA community feel a sense of normalcy again.
