Students of the summer school program

The summer school program “Everything Good Begins With Me” at Lawrence School District's Number Two School at 1 Donahue Place in Inwood is catering to 143 pre-kindergarten to third grade students.

In motivating the students Summer School Principal Elaine Grossman, who is a districtwide reading specialist, has implemented a 100 percent attendance program that is being sponsored by 17 local businesses.

Should a student attain perfect attendance they will receive a gift card from one of the participating businesses. The school day spans from 9 to 11 a.m., five days a weeks. Since school began on June 30, all the students have 100 percent attendance, Grossman said. School ends on July 28.

"They are great kids," said Grossman, who noted that she enjoys the leadership aspect of being a principal and is excited by the children who come to school and ask "am I on time?"
