Nassau County police determined that a suspicious package found in what is being called a common area of Hewlett High School at 12:35 p.m. on June 9 was a backpack, along with a pressure cooker being used for a science project that was left unattended.

The high school was evacuated, and faculty members, students and other school employees waited on the football field before it was deemed safe to return to the building.

A special operations truck and at least eight police cars and two police ambulances responded to the scene.

No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made. The investigation is continuing, police said.
