Taking in Spirit Week, homecoming and the fall festival at Lawrence Woodmere Academy

Posted

I’m a senior at Lawrence Woodmere Academy and have been attending since ninth grade. I’ve been an active member in the school community, partaking in clubs such as student senate, anti-bias, baking club, and soccer. I have my own fashion blog and spend my free time being a personal shopper for all of my friends.

This is my first article for the Nassau Herald and I can’t wait to write more. Last weekend was an exciting one, as LWA celebrated its homecoming and fall festival.

With alumni reunions, Upper School soccer games, fun booths and great food, homecoming was an enjoyable way for the school community to get together and celebrate. Homecoming is a great opportunity for each grade to raise money for events such as school trips and the prom.

Aside from all the preparation required, it’s safe to say that every single one of us loved taking part in creating a fun event for everyone to enjoy. One of the benefits of running the senior booth was taking charge of the big raffles! The juniors felt a wave of relief after making many calls and getting all of their supplies.

As for the underclassmen, still having a lot to learn, they gained experience for future years.

With the big homecoming last Saturday on so many of our minds, the student body nearly got too caught up to remember Spirit Week’s appearance in the halls of LWA the week prior.

Beginning with Red Carpet Day, students dressed in their most beautiful ensembles. “Red carpet day is probably my favorite,” said senior Sarah Gewirtz. “Although we’re not really at an award show, it’s a really good opportunity for the girls to show off their stunning dresses and feel pretty.”

For those of us who aren’t so into dressing up, day two involved a nice dress down pajama day! Bunny slippers, footsie pajamas, and pillows, oh my! Pajama day was hands-down the most widely anticipated theme. Next up was Time Warp Thursday and, finally, Blue and White Friday, in preparation for the afternoon Pep Rally.

At the end of the day, the entire school filled the gym, which the seniors have decked out and decorated with banners, balloons and streamers. This is my fourth year at LWA and, without a doubt; Spirit Week is the most feel-good time of the year.

I hope you came to our Homecoming to celebrate with us. If you missed it, fear not! All our food, games, and prizes will offer an incredible time again next year.
